THE CHALLENGE

- Weight distribution

- Marine durability

- Narrow footprint

- Systems integration

SPATIAL STRATEGY

The spatial plan was completely reconfigured to maximize livability within a 14-foot-wide footprint. The existing kitchen was fully demolished and rebuilt to introduce a central island, creating a multifunctional hub for cooking, dining, and gathering while preserving open circulation throughout the interior. This intervention established a clear spatial anchor without visually closing in the space, allowing the main living zone to feel structured yet expansive.

The layout was designed to make moving through the space feel natural and unobstructed, helping the narrow footprint feel more open and functional, and built-in elements were used to reduce visual and physical clutter. Each zone was designed to serve more than one function, ensuring the space could adapt to daily living while maintaining an open, breathable feel.

MATERIALS + FINISHES

Given the marine environment, all surfaces were chosen for moisture resistance, durability, and weight efficiency, ensuring long-term resilience without compromising structural balance. A restrained palette of warm wood tones, clean neutrals, and subtle texture was used to create a calm, modern atmosphere while visually expanding the interior. Flooring, tile, paint, and surface finishes were selected to reflect light and contribute to an architectural rather than ornamental feel.

SYSTEMS + FUNCTION

Functional planning was central to the design, with appliances, cabinetry, and utilities strategically positioned to support balanced weight distribution across the vessel. Storage was integrated directly into the structure through custom-built solutions, allowing essential systems and daily-use items to remain accessible without adding excess mass or visual clutter. Mechanical and living functions were layered thoughtfully within the limited envelope, ensuring the space operates efficiently as both a home and a seaworthy structure. The result is an interior where performance, safety, and comfort are seamlessly integrated into the design.

The second bedroom was fully gutted and reimagined as a dual-purpose office and laundry space, maximizing function within the existing footprint.

THE OUTCOME

Completed over the course of a year, this project was a labor of love as much as a design challenge. What began as a full gut renovation became a deeply personal exploration of how thoughtful design, persistence, and hands-on problem-solving can transform a constrained structure into a true home. The finished space feels open, calm, and highly functional, supporting everyday living while surrounded by 360-degree water views and rooftop sunshine.

Beyond the physical transformation, the project created a lifestyle rooted in connection, both to the surrounding landscape and to the year-round community of boaters who call the marina home. The result is more than a renovated structure; it’s a carefully crafted living environment that balances performance, comfort, and a strong sense of place.
